More painting skin in 28mm

Wow it’s been a hobby overload in the last few months. I’ve spent pretty much an hour a day ploughing into it and I’ve really started to see some promise and good results. Unfortunately (for this blog) it’s not this hobby I’m talking about. Music has always been a big part of my life. I’m a good clarinettist and I read music well. Now I’m an awful (but improving) violin player. So that’s the reason things have slowed down a bit here. However, I’ve found some time to get on with some more painting skin in 28mm with my Godsworn Hunt warband. You can find the prep stage for painting skin in 28mm here.

The undertones for painting skin in 28mm

I’ve made the point previously that when painting skin in 28mm you need to think of the complexity you’re trying to represent. Bugmans Glow and a sepia wash is cool for an army but for individual figures it’s nice to try and represent the complexity of capillaries and depth more completely. So I start with a thin wash of a mid skin tone (for caucasian skin tones) over the pre shading. After that I use a red and a purple to block the shadow areas in. Finally for this stage I use two lighter shades to block the highlights in. After these two stages, painting skin in 28mm looks utter dogshit.

Painting skin in 28mm – Bringing it together

If you’ve seen my How I Paint articles (here) then you’ll know that the final stage for painting skin in 28mm is to go over all of the undertones with a simple mid tone filter (the same colour I laid over the original undertones. This smooths out the blocks in the undershading and really gives you a rich skin tone. Like this…

So what’s next?

Actually there’s more to this guy already, I’ll write him up as finished when I get time. I can see from the images that there are still some horrible mould lines here. I still think these guys will look cool though. I feel like the other five models in this warband will take me to the end of the year and then I want to crack on with either my BCR or Titanicus next. Next year might be a big year for TEH – I’ve got another new series of articles to come, around getting back into the hobby.
