Ok, I’ll try to keep these short (I certainly won’t be boring you with roll by roll reports) and to the point of what I learned from each game and what I would have done differently.
For reference my lists are here
Game 1 was against Matt who, coincidentally, comes from a part of North London I used to work in so we had a good chinwag about that – always a good thing to have common ground with someone you’ll be playing for three hours.
Matt was in some ways the dream game 1 opponent, and in others a nightmare. He was patient, friendly and understanding of mistakes (I haven’t played for 18 months remember). He plays every week at a club and attends indie tournaments. He also has an optimised (but not WAAC, he took the Glaive off the table when he saw my list) Salamanders list.
This was a lesson. I definitely didn’t get listed out here. I just got seriously outplayed. He knew his ranges and my ranges and always kept me just out of range, made me make bad choices and I ended up just feeding him units. It was obvious early on where this was going so it was three hours of slow torture but I was glad it was game 1 because it really tightened me up. I think I lost 20 points to three, so an absolutely pounding.
I didn’t learn anything specific that I didn’t already know about the game or about Sallies but it did make me immediately go back over the book and try to glean all the juice I could out of ranges and positioning.
Thanks Matt, good game!
