40K – The Infantry

Ok so after a fairly crazy couple of weeks (travelling back to the UK and some home drama) I’ve just got my head down and got all of the 40K infantry to a playable standard.  There’s still quite a lot to do on some of these but my plan is to get the rest of the army to this standard (annoyingly I left the Wraithknight in the UK  so I’ve still got that, three windriders and two farseers on bikes left).  That will mean I can move onto other projects (Adeptus Titanicus and AoS specifically) rather thanb getting sick of chugging through the 40K stuff for a tournament deadline.  Then I’ll take the last couple of weeks or so before the GT to progress any bits that really bring the army down knowing that it’s a ‘nice to do,’ not a necessity.

The Wraithguard

I’ve posted these before but I’m still pretty pleased with them.  The yellow is exactly what I wanted and the blue is really subtle.  The weapons are wet blended and overall they’re a strong table top standard (in my opinion.  Wait, this is all my opinion!)  Next steps with these guys is some freehand on the loin cloths and the the helmets and some tufts on the base.

The Dark Reapers

I posted these before and mentioned that I’m not very happy with them.  Actually they’ve grown on me a bit.  Yes the yellow metal doesn’t scale down very well here so it’s too bright but they look like an 80’s rock band so I’m not too hung up on it/  The blue is blended ok and they look much better with the base at this stage.  The next stage for these is tufts on the base, some freehand icons on the helmets and maybe a bit more contrast on the faces.

The Rangers

I had a bit of trouble with these – I had to go back and respray because my original blue and yellow camouflage looked really terrible.  I like the effect of the cloak and I’ve tried to keep that colour across most of the model (to fit the camouflage theme) but actually it just makes it look like I haven’t tried very hard.  The blending on the bone is something I’m pleased with but these are the units with the most left to do before February.  I want to add the tufts to the base, add another colour to the models (probably a grey / brown for the back packs) and pick out some of the details (there are lots of ribbons and bottles etc hanging from them).  The bare head faces also need some love.

The Wave Serpents

Yeah I’m pretty pleased with these.  At first glance the airbrushing has worked really well (you don’t need to look too hard to find some leaks under the masking but I can correct these later).  I did an oil wash for the undercarriage of these which didn’t really add much value and spent a long time painting the pilot which you can’t really see under the glass.  When I go back to these before February I want to pick out some of the metal details on the top of the Wave Serpent, make sure I do the gems and add some freehand.  With the Wraithguard these are probably the best parts of the army so far.

Righto so it’s 22nd September today, it’s three weeks until I go back to the UK and I can grab the rest of the army.  My plan is to get the whole shebang up to this standard by the end of October.  I’ll keep you posted!
