Ok, so not for any reason other than narcissism I’m only going to look at a) the category I was entering (Hero of Legend) and the Best Army awards.

I’d gone to the event with high hopes of winning the Hero of Legend award with Fulgrim. He’d taken months to paint, was chock full of detail and this wasn’t GD after all. Well, #spoiler alert, he didn’t win.
Rather than be a dickhead about it, well done to the James Wright for his Sigismund model that did win – here it is and here’s what I like about it that I can take into my next painting project (the painting world may not have seen the last of Fulgrim but it prolly has to be honest):

So the things I really like about this paintjob:
- The yellow really pops. Yellow is a tough colour and this one really looks good and stands out in the cabinet. Fulgrim, by contrast, is quite dark overall.
- The NMM is really good. There’s less of it than on Fulgrim and I think that might be the key – my NMM is slightly off and as there’s so much of it, it is a bit of a distraction. So a small amount of excellent NMM is a good touch
- The face is really very well painted – the skin tones are excellent and it’s very smooth.
I don’t think Fulgrim can have been far off and there are elements of mine that I’m pleased with that aren’t on the Sigismund (the detail on the armour is painted, more freehand etc) but ultimately I’m not sad about being beaten by this – it’s really good. and gives me some stuff to work on for my next project (my NMM and working on something brighter and more visually engaging).
The Best Army award caused some controversy in my gaming group. Well done to Jack Bradley for his winning Blood Angels. They’re nice and they won the comp fair and square. Here they are:

There was a lot to like about this army:
- A really vibrant colour – the red really pops
- Consistent basing (pretty simple stuff but consistent and complimentary (green vegetation against the red armour)
- A significant centre piece to the army (a Thunderhawk)
These are things I’ll be taking forward into my AoS Beastmen army as must haves for best army noms. There were, however, a couple of things that bugged me:
- The red was inconsistent – I’m assuming more than one pot of red was used (Vallejo for example are quite inconsistent in colour even with the same serial number)
- The panel modulation was too intense for my taste. This is very personal but it just looked too airbrushed and that detracted from the, really good, decal work for example.
So, some lessons for me for the future on the single minature side and I’m starting to build in my head an idea of what a Best Army winner needs to include.
