How I paint miniatures; Catrina is finished!

Ok, quick update. After being really useful for a couple of ‘How I paint miniatures,’ posts (here, here and here) my second ever non GW 28mm miniature is finished (except the base)!

Catrina, from Morgue Miniatures, was heaps of fun to paint. She’s a really characterful sculpt with loads of contrast and I enjoyed painting her for a few different reasons:

  • Her dead skeleton contrasts with the bright marigolds (although as they’re picked they’re also dying).
  • I wanted to paint flesh for my ‘How I paint,’ posts so chose to paint her dress as flesh, again contrasting with the skeleton
  • The freehand flowers on her dress just advance the living / dying / dead story that the miniature tells

She was really fascinating and while I painted her, her narrative really grew on me. Now I’m stuck for what to do with the base. Either a barren, dead finish or really lush with loads of flowers.

I’ve got another couple of these Morgue Miniature sculpts and I’ve enjoyed this one so much I’m going to make sure they’re all painted before I move onto anything else. But all that’s for the future, I’m overseas for a couple of weeks from the end of this week. I’m getting ready to mask up and head out!

Who is your favourite non GW miniature supplier and why? I’d love to check a few out!
