With my SCE Underworld’s warband in the bag (you can read about that here) I wanted to tick a couple of things off my list, starting with painting purple. It just so happens that my FLGS, within its super limited stock of models, had The Masque. I’ve always liked Slaanesh models (I had a small Slaanesh army in 8th ed WHFB. In fact I think I’ve painted The Masque before but years ago.
I won’t go step by step on how I painted her because, frankly, I didn’t enjoy painting her at all. I don’t know why, maybe my brain was just trained into the SCE – I just couldn’t get to grips with the very fine limbs and small spaces to paint. Anyway, here she is:

What went well?
- The purple went well. I used a flesh tone to lighten the purple for highlights and it just makes the purple so rich, I’m really pleased with it. Purple is a difficult colour to highlight if you just add white to it, it goes chalky, so try some light flesh toner next time you need to highlight purple, you won’t regret it
- The claws are ok. They look shiny (ish) as I used NMM techniques on them.
- The fuscia pink / red. I think my colour choices worked out on this mini, the pinky red is really rich.
What didn’t go so well?
- By the time I’d painted the skin and the purple cloths, I was already pretty fed up with this model. The hair, the NMM and the freehand are all really rushed and not my best work
- I tried some complex freehand on the ribbons but they failed so I just filled them in to get her done.
That’s it really
Not much more to say. I wanted to paint purple, I painted purple and I like it. Maybe, sometimes, you just find a mini that you don’t get on with. This was mine. I’m glad I finished it and learned some stuff though. Something exciting coming next…
