Ok so it’s been a building period recently. I’ve got all of the basic Windriders built and ready for spraying and now the Wraithknight is finished too. I absolutely f*#king hate building models so I haven’t blogged so much about this but as I’m writing this blog and trying to push various elements of my hobby I thought I’d add some interest by magnetising the Wraithknight.
The upsides are many:
- Ease of transport (this is the biggest one for me). I’m trying to get this whole army into a small case
- Different options. Not sure I’ll use them but the sword and board option looks really cool on the model
- Survivability. The theory is, if I drop the knight, it’ll split at the magnets, not break at the glue. Here’s hoping I never find out.
So what magnets did I use?
5mm x 1mm on:
-feet to base
-arms to shoulders
-shoulder guns and
3mm x 2mm on the waist.
They all went on really easily but I didn’t try anything hard (mainly because I don’t have the tools here so:
a) The shoulder mounted gun magnets haven’t been sunk into the plastic so they’re visible. I don’t care because I’m not looking for a GD with this army but it doesn’t look great
b) I had to cut some of the back of the WK to fit the waist joint in after squaring some of the top of the waist and filling some of the void. Not only did I make a bit of a horlicks out of the cutting but the magnets are 2mm deep (so a combined 4mm) which makes the WK look slightly like he’s wearing high waisted jeans. Again, not disastrous but with more tools and experience I’m sure I’ll get better at this.
I actually bought the magnets for Adeptus Titanicus which, I believe, has all the magnet points sunk already so hopefully that won’t be an issue.
Anyway, any comments more than welcome!

I have used a few magnets on mini’s that I though benefited from there use, not very often, but enough to know that they can be a pain to install, but work slick once you are finished. I often found a quick trip to the local hardware store can net you a set of various sized drill bits for under $10. What I do is use them as a hand drill. Simple spin the bit with you hand, not a power tool. This gives you control placement and depth. Hope this helps and good luck with your building!
Thanks very much – I’ll definitely try using larger drill bits in the future!
