Warhammer Underworlds. Some progress.

Ok, so there hasn’t been a lot of blogging recently and some of what I was planning (30K ToS for example) isn’t happening. But some things have progressed, namely my warband for Warhammer Underworlds: Nightvault.

I don’t have the rest of the game with me so I can’t remember what these guys are called (other than that they’re SCE) but I’ve mainly be using them as NMM gold practice.

This stared with a (non Nightvault) mini that I like the paint job of but I’m not crazy about:

It was the best NMM I’ve done but still isn’t as good as I want – the blends are a bit rough and the contrast not as high as I wanted. With that in mind I added an extra colour to my blends and really focused on the contrast and finished this model next (this is the first one in the warband):

More contrast? Check. Smoother blends? Check. Fails because of my usual inability to pick the right colours? Check. Actually, that’s harsh, it’s pretty cool, I’m quite pleased with it but it’s too orang and looks weird. And the blends still aren’t that smooth. But the contrast is definitely a win. So I tried again. Keep the high contrast, don’t do anything drastic with the colour choices but add more steps to get the blends smoother and this is where I’ve ended up:

As it stands this is the absolute limit of my NMM painting. I’m really pleased with it. I’ve started the third and final model of the warband and it’s shaping up along these lines. The only issue I have is that one of the three is orange and these other two are more or a yellow gold. I’m leaving the bases to paint them all together so, hopefully, that will tie them together a bit.

So what’s next? Finish the third mini then do all the bases. After that I’d really like to have a go at another three SCE but reverse the scheme so the armour is steel and the weapons are gold – my NMM steel game is now significantly behind my gold game.

Until then, I’ll post some pics when the last one is finished. C & C welcome!

  • You’ve unearthed a nostalgic love of mine. I used to dabble in 40k, and I’d like to again. I really like your NMM “non metallic metal. Yes! it looks like metal. That takes some skill. They all teased us at school, but these skills are the same that Monet and Van Gogh mastered. Who’s laughing now?
    Keep the good posts coming.
